What to see in South Tyrol and Bolzano
You will surely be captivated by Bolzano, a main crossroad and thoroughfare connecting North and South Europe ever since it was founded by the Romans in 14 BC under the name of “Pons Drusi”. In fact, the town's nature has been profoundly shaped by the convergence of two strong historical influences: Italian and German cultures that still coexist here in an extraordinary cultural blend.
Bolzano should be experienced little by little, in every season of the year. The town centre is unique in its kind and its architecture confirms a history of prosperous trade. There are also many ecclesiastical buildings, churches and museums near the Hotel Città. Important cultural and musical events, theatre and cinema performances, exhibitions and fairs take place regularly as well as the annual delightful Christmas Market on Piazza Walther.
Activities
Bolzano is a crossroad for all the main South Tyrolean valleys and for the splendid Dolomites, UNESCO World Heritage Site: Alpe di Siusi, Val Gardena with Passo Sella, Catinaccio, Sesto Dolomites with the Tre Cime di Lavaredo.
To the west, crossing Merano and the Val Venosta, one reaches the Ortles Massif and the Val Senales (where Ötzi was found) where it is possible to ski year-round. All these excursions are one-day outings that allow you to return to the hotel in the evening and plan a new itinerary for the following day.
If you prefer to visit Bolzano’s surrounding area, you can use one of the three cable cars that start out from town and reach the plateaus above, offering a spectacular view overlooking Bolzano. Numerous sunlit trails lead to nearby castles running through orchards, vineyards and farmsteads.
